Many procurement teams see a specialist environmental software vendor as a gamble for a system they will rely on for decades.
We understand that caution. A compliance system has to outlast several reporting cycles, several audits, and usually several changes on the environmental team.
We also think the belief breaks in three places. Swipe through for each one.
The first is financial fragility. The assumption is that a niche vendor is one bad year away from disappearing. Since 2018, NEMS has been part of Carina Software Portfolio, owned by Vela Software within Constellation Software Inc., a global group known for long term investment in specialized software businesses.
The second is loss of focus. An acquired specialist is expected to be folded into something broader and more generic. Our ownership model keeps our operational independence and continued reinvestment in product development. We still operate from Stavanger, close to the energy industry we come from, focused on environmental software for oil and gas.
The third is that specialist knowledge is short lived. In the early 1990s we helped develop the OLF Environmental Programme compendiums on emissions to air and discharges to sea. The Norwegian National Library has digitized and preserved them.
They are still referenced nearly 30 years later.
This is why the question matters beyond procurement. Operators have to keep demonstrating environmental management excellence to maintain their social license to operate. That commitment is measured across many years, so the system and the expertise behind it need to hold steady just as long.
Vendor size is an easy proxy. It says very little about whether a reporting partner will still understand your emission sources ten reporting cycles from now.
A better test for choosing a reporting partner has three parts. The domain knowledge it has retained. The stability of its ownership. Whether it keeps reinvesting in the product.
